Key idea

compare three-digit numbers by hundreds, then tens, then ones.

Sample problems

  1. Compare 342 and 351. Write <, > or =.
  2. Compare 442 and 342. Write the whole comparison.
  3. Compare 342 and 342. Explain the symbol.
  4. Order 351, 342, 442 from least to greatest.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Use a picture, objects or another calculation to check.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
