Key idea

choose multiplication or division from the quantities in a story.

Sample problems

  1. 3 teams have 4 players each. How many players? Write an equation with ?.
  2. 12 pencils are packed 3 to a bag. How many bags?
  3. 12 stickers are shared among 4 children. How many each?
  4. A ribbon 15 cm long is cut into 3 equal pieces. How long is each piece?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Name the units. Use a picture or another calculation to check.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
