Rate and start, for both, in the same form — then compare. An output is not a rate.
Sample problems
- Give the rate and starting value of y = 5x − 3.
- A table has x: 0,1,2 → y: 4,10,16. Find its rate and starting value.
- A graph passes through (0,1) and (4,21). Find its rate and starting value.
- Of the three above, which has the greatest rate? Which starts highest?
Common mistakes to watch for
- Compared 3 with 11, or with 5. Those are an OUTPUT and a STARTING VALUE; neither is a rate. The table never printed its rate, which is why it has to be worked out before anything can be compared.
- Answered A, carrying over the item 1 result. The two questions have DIFFERENT answers on purpose — that is the point of asking both.
- Agreed, or corrected the answer without naming that two DIFFERENT KINDS of quantity were compared. That naming is the skill; the arithmetic is not the difficulty here.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
