Key idea

Translation adds. Reflection flips one sign — the axis you reflect in is the coordinate that survives. Rotation swaps and changes a sign. Dilation multiplies: lengths × k, area × k². Only the dilation changes size.

Sample problems

  1. Write the coordinate rule for a translation of a right and b up.
  2. Write the coordinate rules for reflecting in the x-axis and in the y-axis.
  3. Translate (2,1), (6,1), (2,4) by 3 left and 2 up. Give the corners.
  4. Rotate (2,1), (6,1), (2,4) by 90° anticlockwise about the origin. Give the corners.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Added 3 instead of multiplying — item 3 is that error done deliberately. Or multiplied only one coordinate, which stretches the figure instead of enlarging it.
  • Multiplied the lengths by 9. The AREA goes up by 9; the lengths go up by 3.
  • Said the answer is wrong without working out the sides. The measurement is the whole point: it shows the error produced the wrong KIND of figure, not just wrong numbers. Also common: saying he should have multiplied, which is right, and does not say what his answer actually is.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
