Key idea

directly compare a shared attribute using aligned ends or a balance.

Sample problems

  1. Line up the starts. Which strip is longer?
  2. Which strip is shorter? Show the aligned ends.
  3. Build two towers like the picture. Which is taller?
  4. The balance compares real bags of equal cubes. Which bag is heavier?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Count each object once.
  • Use the provided visual tools.
  • An adult may record the child’s words.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
