Key idea

see one ten as a bundle of ten ones.

Sample problems

  1. Build 10 ones. Bundle ten. How many tens and loose ones?
  2. 2 ten-bundles have how many ones?
  3. Open 2 ten-bundles. How many loose ones?
  4. Draw 2 tens as rods. Mark ten ones in each.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Build it or draw it. Tell how you know.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
