Key idea

Name the amount that represents one copy, then count equal copies.

Sample problems

  1. Tan has 4 cards. Digit has 3 times as many. Draw equal bars and find Digit’s number.
  2. Blaze has 12 stickers, 3 times Tan’s number. How many does Tan have? Draw equal groups.
  3. A ribbon is 4 cm long. Another is 12 cm long. How many times as long is the second?
  4. Compare “4 more than 4” and “4 times as many as 4.” Draw and find both.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • A student adds 3 + 4 and gets 7 instead of making three copies of 4.
  • Name the quantities and units before choosing an operation.
  • A claim needs an explanation or a counterexample, not just an answer.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
