State the rule, count the starting term, and explain features that the rule creates.
Sample problems
- Start at 2. Add 3 each time. Write the first six terms, counting the start as term 1.
- Term 1 is 2; the rule is add 3. Find term 10 without listing all ten.
- A pattern is 2, 5, 8, 11. Give a rule and the next two terms.
- A growing row of touching squares uses 4 sticks for 1 square and 7 for 2. Find sticks for 3, 4 and 5 squares.
Common mistakes to watch for
- A student counts six jumps for term 6 instead of five jumps after term 1.
- Name the quantities and units before choosing an operation.
- A claim needs an explanation or a counterexample, not just an answer.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
