Key idea
A fraction IS a division: top divided by bottom. The bottom is how many are sharing. If there are fewer things than sharers, every share is less than one.
Sample problems
- Write as divisions and work out: 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/8.
- Work out as mixed numbers: 13/4, 17/5, 9/2.
- 4 pizzas are shared between 6 people. How much each? Say more or less than one first.
- 7 metres of ribbon is cut into 4 equal lengths. How long is each?
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered “0 remainder 3” or “you cannot”. A cake can be cut, so the fraction IS the answer — the opposite reading from the “Multistep problems and remainders” sheet (Grade 4), where the remainder had to stay whole because a bus cannot be cut.
- Wrote 8 ÷ 5 and 5 ÷ 17, taking the larger number first. The 5/8 case gives 1.6 instead of 0.625, which is more than 1 — impossible for a fraction whose top is smaller than its bottom.
- Said Tom “divided the wrong way round”. That names the error and the item asked for why the ANSWER is impossible — the under-or-over-one judgement is the check that works when a child cannot remember which way round to divide, which is exactly when they need it.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
