Key idea
How many fit? → the answer is bigger than the total. How much each? → the answer is smaller than the amount shared. Multiply back to check. The question decides the units of the answer.
Sample problems
- Work out 3 ÷ ¼
- Work out 2 ÷ ⅓
- Work out 5 ÷ ½
- Work out ¼ ÷ 3
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 1/12 — the other division's answer. Saying the question in words first is what separates them, which is why the item asks for it.
- Answered 12 — the other division's answer. The two divisions use the same numbers and their answers sit on opposite sides of them.
- Answered 3/4, which is 3 litres shared between 4 — the other question. 3/4 of a litre is an amount and the item asked how many glasses, so even the units are wrong.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
