Key idea

To check a value, put it back into the original statement and see whether the result is true. Is k = 12 a solution of k − 4 = 8? 12 − 4 = 8 → 8 = 8 ✓ Yes. Inequalities work the same way, but many values will pass.

Sample problems

  1. Is n = 7 a solution of n + 8 = 15?
  2. Is y = 7 a solution of 4y = 28?
  3. Is m = 14 a solution of m − 5 = 9?
  4. Is x = 18 a solution of x ÷ 3 = 6?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Re-solved the equation instead of substituting. Checking means putting the value IN, not working it out again.
  • Wrote 36 by reading 3x at x = 6 as the digits 3 and 6 together.
  • Counted 4 as a solution. The strict symbol > excludes the boundary value; ≥ includes it.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
