Key idea
ab means use a as a factor b times. 62 = 6 × 6 = 36. Write the expansion first — it prevents almost every exponent error.
Sample problems
- Evaluate 52.
- Evaluate 24.
- Evaluate 103.
- Evaluate 43. Show the expansion.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 12 — multiplied the base by the exponent. The exponent COUNTS the factors; it is not one of them.
- Answered 10 (2 × 5) or 25 (mixed up base and exponent).
- Answered 3/2 or 1.5 — multiplied by 3 instead of using ½ three times. Note the result is SMALLER: repeated multiplication by a number less than 1 shrinks it.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
