Key idea
Percent of an amount: multiply by the percent over 100. Increase by p%: multiply by 1 + p/100. Decrease by p%: multiply by 1 − p/100. Percent change = (new − old) ÷ old, as a percent.
Sample problems
- Find 30% of 50.
- Find 8% of 250.
- Increase 40 by 10%.
- Decrease 90 by 30%.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 20, copying the percent. A percent is an instruction, not the answer.
- Answered $6, giving the tip rather than the total. Read what the question asked for.
- Answered $20, the discount rather than the price.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
