Unit rate = amount ÷ number of units. Dividing by a fraction less than 1 makes the answer bigger; dividing by a fraction bigger than 1 makes it smaller. Use that as your check before you write anything down.
Sample problems
- ⅓ mile in ₁⁄₉ hour. Miles per hour?
- ½ cup per ⅛ serving. Cups per serving?
- ⅕ km in ₃⁄₁₀ hour. Km per hour?
- ⁵⁄₆ litre in ⅓ minute. Litres per minute?
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered ⅛ by multiplying instead of dividing. The sense check catches it instantly — ⅛ is smaller than the half mile already run.
- Answered ⃗ by multiplying. A whole batch needs more flour than half a batch, not less.
- Answered ₁⁄₉ by multiplying the fractions.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
