P(event) = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes, giving a number from 0 to 1. 0 is impossible, 1 is certain, ½ is even. All the probabilities of one situation add to exactly 1. Two possible outcomes does not mean even chances.
Sample problems
- Find P(green).
- Find P(not green).
- Add your two answers. What do you get, and why must it be that?
- Find P(red or green).
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 3. A probability is a fraction of the whole, so it needs the total underneath.
- Said blue because there are more of them, without converting to a probability. True here, but the comparison must be between probabilities when totals differ.
- Answered ₃⁄⁷ by comparing red with non-red. A probability's denominator is always the TOTAL, not the other group.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
