Key idea

Split factors into place-value parts. Multiply every part, label its value, and combine all partial products. Estimates help judge size.

Sample problems

  1. Estimate, then find 236 × 4 using partial products or an area model. Label each part and check your total.
  2. Estimate, then find 1,028 × 3 using partial products or an area model. Label each part and check your total.
  3. Estimate, then find 24 × 13 using partial products or an area model. Label each part and check your total.
  4. Estimate, then find 37 × 24 using partial products or an area model. Label each part and check your total.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • A student calculates 236 × 4 as 800 + 120 + 6, leaving the ones part unmultiplied.
  • Check the place-value units and explain your reasoning.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
