Key idea

Use the original number, two neighboring multiples of the requested unit, and their midpoint. Halfway cases round up in these resources.

Sample problems

  1. Round 3,749 to the nearest 100. Label both neighboring multiples and their midpoint. Use halfway-round-up.
  2. Round 6,500 to the nearest 1,000. Label both neighboring multiples and their midpoint. Use halfway-round-up.
  3. Round 23,451 to the nearest 1,000. Label both neighboring multiples and their midpoint. Use halfway-round-up.
  4. Round 9,980 to the nearest 100. Label both neighboring multiples and their midpoint. Use halfway-round-up.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • A student rounds 3,749 to 3,750 first, then to 3,800 instead of using the original number.
  • Check the place-value units and explain your reasoning.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
