Key idea

Each place-value unit is ten times the next unit to its right. A digit tells how many units of that size are present.

Sample problems

  1. In 6,384, what is the value of the digit 6 in the thousands place? Explain using units.
  2. In 57,208, what is the value of the digit 7 in the thousands place? Explain using units.
  3. In 40,440, what is the value of the digit 4 in the ten-thousands place? Explain using units.
  4. Write the value of every 3 in 33,333. Explain the factor between neighboring values.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • A student writes 6 instead of 6,000, naming the digit rather than its value.
  • Check the place-value units and explain your reasoning.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
