Key idea

Estimate for the size and the number of digits. One digit per step, including the steps that give none. Multiply back. A remainder is smaller than the divisor, and is not a decimal part.

Sample problems

  1. Estimate, then work out 966 ÷ 42, then check.
  2. Estimate, then work out 8415 ÷ 33, then check.
  3. Estimate, then work out 2050 ÷ 41, then check.
  4. Estimate, then work out 7225 ÷ 25, then check.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered 23, omitting the 0 for the step where 24 would not go into 7. Nothing was miscalculated; a step whose answer was zero produced no digit, and the estimate of 200 was available to catch it.
  • Answered 30 remainder 40. The remainder is larger than the divisor, which means another 32 fits — and that is checkable with no other information, so it should never reach the page.
  • Named the missing zero and gave one check, or gave the checks without saying which step was missed. The item asks for the step AND two checks, because a child who can only find this error when told to look for it has not gained anything reusable.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
