Key idea
Digits move; the point stays. One place left is ten times as much, one place right is one tenth. The exponent of 10 says how many places.
Sample problems
- Work out 3.4 × 10
- Work out 3.4 × 100
- Work out 3.4 × 1000
- Work out 62 ÷ 10
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 0.60 — the same amount as 0.6, so nothing was multiplied.
- Answered 2.700 — zeros added rather than digits moved; or 27, reading the exponent as one place.
- Answered 450 unchanged, or 0.450. Every wrong answer here is the same amount as the number started with, which is the give-away.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
