Watch: 2-3 Digit Multiplication Step by Step (Fast Method)
Key idea
One partial product per digit, each carrying its own place. Multiply, then add the carry. Estimate first, so a wrong answer shows up as the wrong size.
Sample problems
- Estimate, then work out 47 × 23.
- Estimate, then work out 125 × 34.
- Estimate, then work out 208 × 45.
- Work out 47 × 3, writing each step. Where exactly does the carried 2 get used?
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 380, from 228 + 152 with the second partial unshifted. Against an estimate of 2000 this is out by a factor of five, and the estimate is what makes that obvious without checking a single digit.
- Answered 864, having treated 306 as 36 — the interior 0 contributes nothing to add, so it was skipped when writing rather than held as a place. 864 against 7200 is caught instantly.
- Said Leo “forgot to move the second line along”. That names the symptom. What makes it stick is that the 2 MEANS TWENTY, so 940 is the number the line is standing for — a child who knows only the movement has a ritual to remember, and rituals get skipped.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
