Key idea

Volume is a count of unit cubes packed with no gaps. Count by layers so nothing needs to be visible. Volume is the space inside; surface is the skin.

Sample problems

  1. Find the volume by counting layers: a 4 × 3 × 2 prism.
  2. Find the volume by counting layers: a 5 × 2 × 3 prism.
  3. Find the volume by counting layers: a 6 × 2 × 2 prism.
  4. Find the volume of a 3 × 3 × 3 cube.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered 24 with no unit, or “24 square units”. A volume is measured in CUBIC units, and the unit is what says whether space or skin was measured.
  • Answered 0 hidden, on the grounds that “you can see them all if you turn it round”. Turning it round shows different outsides; the centre cube has no face on any of them.
  • Said Sam “miscounted” or “forgot one”. He did not miscount — his count was complete for what he was counting. The error is about what a DRAWING is, and the layer method is what makes visibility irrelevant.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
