Key idea

l × w is the area of the base; h is the number of layers. They multiply because every layer holds the same. Composite solids: split into non-overlapping prisms and add.

Sample problems

  1. Find the volume of a 4 × 3 × 2 prism.
  2. Find the volume of a 5 × 2 × 3 prism.
  3. Find the volume of a 6 × 4 × 5 prism.
  4. For the 4 × 3 × 2 prism, work out the volume three times, using a different face as the base each time.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered 15, adding 6 + 4 + 5. One layer alone holds 24 cubes, so 15 is smaller than a single layer of the solid.
  • Multiplied the overall outside dimensions, treating it as one 5 × 4 × 4 block and getting 80. That counts a great deal of empty space above the lower block — the shape is not a full box.
  • Said Nia “should have multiplied, not added”. That is the rule, and the item asks for an argument from CUBES — because a child who only knows which operation to use cannot tell whether 9 is wrong by a little or absurd, and 9 being smaller than one layer is what makes it absurd.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
