Key idea

Ask: which one do I choose? (independent) and which one responds? (dependent). Write the dependent variable alone on the left. Tickets at $5 each: you choose t tickets, cost responds → c = 5t. A table of x and y shows the same relationship, one row at a time.

Sample problems

  1. Tickets cost $5 each. Write an equation for cost c and number of tickets t, then find c when t = 9.
  2. Complete the table for y = 4x at x = 1, 2, 3, 4.
  3. A train travels 60 km/h. Write an equation for distance d and time t, then find d at t = 4.
  4. Each brick weighs 2.5 kg. Write an equation for total weight w and number of bricks b, then find w when b = 6.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Wrote t = 55d — backwards. The dependent variable goes alone on the left.
  • Wrote n = 8c. Ask which quantity you control — that one is independent.
  • Added 3 to x instead of multiplying, giving 4, 5, 6, 7.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
