Key idea

A recipe is 4 cups flour : 6 rolls. Make an equivalent ratio by scaling both parts by the same number: ÷2 → 2:3, or ×2 → 8:12. Check two ratios are equivalent by reducing both to lowest terms.

Sample problems

  1. Write a ratio equivalent to 2:3 by multiplying both parts by 4.
  2. Write a ratio equivalent to 10:15 by dividing both parts by 5.
  3. Is 3:5 equivalent to 9:15? Show how you know.
  4. Complete the ratio table for cups : servings = 2 : 5 at 4 cups, 6 cups, and 10 cups.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Scaled only one part (e.g., 6:4) — both parts must be multiplied by the same number.
  • Checked with addition (2→6 is +4, 5→15 is +10) — equivalence is multiplicative, not additive.
  • Added 2 to the wheels each row instead of scaling with the ratio.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
