Key idea

A walker covers 12 miles in 4 hours. To find the time for 21 miles, reason with the rate: speed = 12 ÷ 4 = 3 mph; time = 21 ÷ 3 = 7 hours. Choose a ratio table, the unit rate, or scaling.

Sample problems

  1. 3 pens cost $6. What is the cost of 7 pens?
  2. A printer prints 5 pages in 2 minutes. How many pages in 10 minutes?
  3. A table shows 4 apples cost $2. What is the cost of 10 apples?
  4. A recipe for 6 muffins uses 2 cups of flour. How much flour for 15 muffins?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Scaled only the number of tickets, or added $10 again per ticket.
  • Divided the wrong way (3 ÷ 90), or added 90 for each extra gallon.
  • Added 6 for each extra person, or scaled by 2 (4→8) and stopped.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
