Key idea

4 muffins cost $6.00. Cost of one muffin = $6.00 ÷ 4 = $1.50 per muffin. (A unit rate is the amount for exactly one.)

Sample problems

  1. 2 pounds of rice cost $3.00. What is the cost per pound?
  2. 6 oranges cost $2.40. What is the cost of one orange?
  3. A student types 150 words in 5 minutes. What is the rate in words per minute?
  4. 8 concert tickets cost $52.00. What is the price of one ticket?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Multiplied instead of divided ($4.50) → doesn’t grasp that a unit rate is cost per one.
  • Answered 360 → multiplied; or wrote 3 ÷ 120 → divided in the wrong order (rate is the quantity per one hour).
  • Found $1.25 but added instead of scaling for 7; or never found the unit rate first.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
