Key idea

Undo multiplication with division, on both sides. 8x = 72 → x = 72 ÷ 8 = 9. Check: 8(9) = 72 ✓ Divide the total BY the coefficient — 8 ÷ 72 is upside down.

Sample problems

  1. Solve 5x = 35.
  2. Solve 8x = 72.
  3. Solve 12x = 12.
  4. Solve 6x = 15. Give your answer as a fraction or decimal.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered 15 — subtracted 3. Subtraction undoes addition; division undoes multiplication.
  • Answered 49 — subtracted 7.
  • Answered 6 (subtracted), or rounded to 2 because the answer ‘should’ be whole. Solutions need not be whole numbers.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
