Key idea
Undo addition with subtraction, applied to both sides. x + 18 = 45 → x = 45 − 18 = 27. Check: 27 + 18 = 45 ✓ If your check fails, you almost certainly added instead of subtracting.
Sample problems
- Solve x + 4 = 11.
- Solve x + 9 = 23.
- Solve x + 13 = 13.
- Solve x + ¼ = ¾.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 19 — added 7 again. The equation tells you what was done TO x; you do the opposite.
- Answered 55 — added instead of subtracting.
- Answered 8.5, or misaligned the decimals (writing 6 as 6.0 prevents that).
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
