Key idea

Decide the operation from the situation. A single change → add the signed amount. A repeated change → multiply. A comparison or gap → subtract. Sharing → divide. Then turn the signed answer back into words.

Sample problems

  1. An account holds $120. A payment of $95 goes out. What is the balance?
  2. Three separate charges of $18 are made. What is the total change to the balance?
  3. Starting from $120, apply the $95 payment and the three $18 charges. What is the final balance? Say what it means.
  4. The temperature is −7°C and rises 15 degrees. What is the new temperature?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered 15 with no sign, which reads as $15 in credit — the opposite of the truth. The sign carries the meaning here.
  • Answered −7 by adding the two numbers. Ask what each number measures — degrees and hours cannot be added.
  • Answered 7 by computing 12 − 5. The two temperatures are on opposite sides of zero, so the journeys add.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
