Key idea

Estimate first with friendly numbers, then calculate, then compare. If the answer is far from the estimate, one of the two is wrong — and finding out which is the point. Convert between fractions and decimals whichever way makes the arithmetic easier.

Sample problems

  1. Four items cost $7.25 each. Find the total.
  2. Take 10% off that total. What is the new price?
  3. A tank holds 60 litres and is ¾ full. How many litres are in it?
  4. How many litres would fill it?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Added 8 dollars instead of 8 percent, giving $45.50. The estimate flags it — $45.50 is far above $36 for an 8% addition.
  • Answered 15 go and 30 stay by finding ⅓. Read which fraction the question names.
  • Answered 16¾ by adding the sizes and ignoring the negative.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
