Key idea

Solve like an equation. Multiplying or dividing by a negative reverses the inequality — confirm it by testing rather than trusting memory. Adding or subtracting a negative does not reverse anything. Symbols with a line (≤, ≥) include the boundary.

Sample problems

  1. Solve 2x + 5 > 13.
  2. Test x = 5 in the original inequality.
  3. Test x = 4 in the original inequality. What does this tell you about the boundary?
  4. Solve −3x < 9.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Wrote x > 5 as a single answer of 5. An inequality has infinitely many solutions; 5 is the boundary, not the answer.
  • Answered x > −3 by keeping the sign. The test at x = 0 disproves it immediately, which is why testing beats remembering.
  • Excluded 3, treating ≤ as <. The line under the symbol is what admits the boundary value.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
