Key idea
Undo operations in reverse order: deal with addition and subtraction first, then multiplication and division. Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. Check every answer by substituting it back into the ORIGINAL equation.
Sample problems
- Solve 5x + 3 = 28.
- Solve 6x − 4 = 26.
- Your answers to questions 1 and 2 are the same. Does that mean the equations are the same? Explain.
- Solve 3x + 11 = 2.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Wrote 5 − 3x = 20 because 5 appears first in the sentence. ‘5 less than something’ always means that something minus 5.
- Divided by 4 first, giving x + 7 = 7.75. Undo addition before multiplication — the reverse of how the expression was built.
- Wrote 9 − 2x = 13, reversing the subtraction.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
