Multiplying or dividing: same signs → positive, different signs → negative. Adding: the number line decides, and two negatives stay negative. Decide the sign first, then the size — it stops you carrying a sign error through the arithmetic.
Sample problems
- Find −7 × 3.
- Find −7 × (−3).
- Find −7 + (−3).
- Questions 2 and 3 use the same two numbers and give different signs. Explain why.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 24 by ignoring the sign. Decide the sign first, then the size.
- Answered 24 for both, applying the chant to the addition. The debt check catches it instantly.
- Gave the same sign for both. Changing the sign of the divisor flips the sign of the answer.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
