Slope = change in y over change in x. It is the unit rate. Read the axis scale. Compare rates, never raw totals.
Sample problems
- Find the slope of the line through (0,0) and (5,15).
- Find the slope through (0,0) and (8,4).
- A line goes through (0,8) and (4,0). Find its slope and say what the sign means.
- Explain why slope is change in y over change in x, and not the other way round.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered ₃⁄¹² = 0.25 by inverting.
- Agreed. Inverting is the commonest error in the topic and it is hard to spot because the wrong answer still looks like a slope. Checking against the rate in words is the reliable defence.
- Answered 2 by counting squares rather than units. Same skipped step as reading a bar graph without its scale, and it is invisible on the page — the counting was correct.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
