Step-by-step math videos on the Math With Mr DJ YouTube channel →Key idea
Multiply → add exponents. Power of a power → multiply them. Divide → subtract. x⁰ = 1. x⁻ⁿ = ₁⁄xⁿ.
Sample problems
- Write 3⁴ as a product of factors, then evaluate it.
- Simplify 7³ × 7⁵ and (7³)⁵.
- Simplify 2⁷ ÷ 2⁴.
- Explain why 9⁰ = 1, using the division law.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 5⁸ by multiplying the exponents, which is the powering law used in the wrong place. Or 25⁶, multiplying the bases as well.
- Gave the same answer to both, which is the swap this whole sheet is about. Read the explanation rather than the two values — a child can land on 2⁶ by luck.
- Answered 4⁰ = 0, reading zero as nothing; or 3⁻² = −9 or −6.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
