Key idea
x² = 25 → x = ±5 (two solutions). √25 → 5 (one value). ∛(−8) = −2.
Sample problems
- List the perfect squares to 144 and the perfect cubes to 125.
- Solve x² = 81 and x² = 1.
- Evaluate √81, √144 and ∛64.
- Explain, in your own words, why x² = 36 has two solutions but √36 has one.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Gave only x = 7. This is the commonest error in the topic and it costs a root in every equation from here to quadratics.
- Answered ±7, carrying the equation's two solutions onto the symbol. Read items 1 and 2 together: getting both right is the skill, and getting the same answer to both means the distinction has not landed.
- Answered 9 and about 41 by dividing by 3. Check by cubing: 9³ = 729, nowhere near 27.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
