Watch: How to Solve Order of Operations Using PEMDAS
Key idea
× and ÷ are one rank, left to right. + and − are one rank, left to right. Brackets mean “this is one number”, innermost first.
Sample problems
- Evaluate 5 + 2 × 8.
- Evaluate (5 + 2) × 8.
- Evaluate 30 − 12 ÷ 4.
- Evaluate 40 ÷ (2 + 3).
Common mistakes to watch for
- Answered 35 for both. 35 is the right value of the bracketed expression, so the child read the unbracketed one left to right — the brackets were not misunderstood, they were unnecessary to the method being used.
- Answered 11 — the ladder reading of PEMDAS, doing A before S. 11 is the correct value of 20 − (6 + 3), so the child inserted brackets nobody wrote.
- Answered 2 — M done before D. 2 is the correct value of 24 ÷ (6 × 2), again brackets nobody wrote.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
