Watch: Coordinate Plane Explained: Plotting Points and Quadrants
Key idea
Two number lines crossing at (0, 0). First number along the x-axis, second along the y-axis. Count spaces, not lines. Zero is an instruction.
Sample problems
- Plot and label: (2, 7), (7, 2), (4, 4), (0, 3), (3, 0).
- Write the coordinates of a point 5 spaces right and 2 up from the origin.
- Write the coordinates of a point 2 spaces right and 5 up from the origin.
- Which of these points would be plotted in the same place if the two numbers were swapped: (3, 5), (6, 6), (0, 2), (9, 9)?
Common mistakes to watch for
- Plotted A and B in each other's positions, or placed C and D at the same point because “the 0 does not do anything”. 0 across and 0 up are different instructions and give different points.
- Answered “6 and 24” with no units. On a real-world graph the units are what the point MEANS — the same discipline as the “Line plots with fractions” sheet (Grade 5)’s dots against litres.
- Said Ola “mixed up x and y” and stopped. The second half of the item is the valuable one and it is about EVIDENCE: a diagonal point cannot distinguish the two methods, so being right about (4, 4) is not being right — the same argument as the “Relating two number patterns” sheet (Grade 5)’s one-pair rule.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
