Watch: Dividing With Fractions: Step By Step Guide
Key idea
Keep · Change · Flip. Keep 5/6, change ÷ to ×, flip 2/3 to 3/2: 5/6 × 3/2 = 15/12 = 5/4. Ask yourself what the division means: how many 2/3s fit into 5/6?
Sample problems
- Compute ½ ÷ 1/8.
- Compute 2/3 ÷ 1/3.
- Compute 4/5 ÷ 2/5.
- Compute 3/4 ÷ ½. Give your answer as a fraction.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Multiplied without flipping (½ × ¼ = 1/8), or flipped the FIRST fraction instead of the second.
- Answered 3/4 (multiplied), or 0.75 — treated ‘of’ as division.
- Multiplied to get 2/18, or subtracted the fractions.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
