Watch: Absolute Value Explained Step by Step
Key idea
Farther right = greater. Always. To compare mixed forms, convert first: −2/5 = −0.4, which is LESS than −0.3 because it sits farther left.
Sample problems
- Which is greater: −7 or −2?
- True or false: −1 > −9. Explain.
- Order from least to greatest: −4, 3, −6.
- Which is greater: −½ or −¼? Show how you decided.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Chose −8 because 8 > 3. On the negative side, a larger digit means a SMALLER number.
- Wrote −1, −5, 0, 2 — ordered the negatives by digit size instead of position.
- Chose −0.75 because 75 > 5. Compare positions, and note 0.5 = 0.50, which is less than 0.75.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
