Key idea
Numbers increase left to right, always. Negatives are a mirror of the positives: −3 sits as far left of 0 as 3 sits right of it. On a grid, (x, y) means across first, then up/down.
Sample problems
- Which is farther left: −6 or −2?
- Between which two whole numbers does −½ lie?
- Between which two whole numbers does 2.5 lie?
- Write −7/2 as a decimal, then name the two whole numbers it lies between.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Chose −1 by comparing the digits 3 and 1 instead of the positions.
- Placed it between 0 and 1 (ignored the sign) or at −1 exactly.
- Said Quadrant IV — reversed the coordinates and plotted (3, −4) instead.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
