Key idea

V = l × w × h, fractions included. Turn mixed numbers into improper fractions first: 2½ = ⅝. Volume is cubic units because you are filling three directions at once.

Sample problems

  1. Find the volume of a prism 2 by 3 by 4.
  2. Find the volume of a cube with edge ⅓ unit.
  3. Find the volume of a prism 5 by 2 by 3.
  4. Find the volume of a prism 3½ by 2 by 4.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Added the edges (12) or wrote square units instead of cubic units.
  • Answered 1½ by adding the edges, or &frac32; by multiplying ½ by 3.
  • Dropped the fraction and used 2, giving 12.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
