Watch: Coordinate Plane Explained: Plotting Points and Quadrants
Key idea
(x, y) — across, then up or down. Quadrant I is (+, +), II is (−, +), III is (−, −), IV is (+, −). A point with a zero coordinate sits on an axis and is in no quadrant. Connect polygon vertices in the order listed, then back to the first.
Sample problems
- Plot (2, 7) and name its quadrant.
- Plot (−5, 3) and name its quadrant.
- Plot (−2, −6) and name its quadrant.
- Plot (4, −1) and name its quadrant.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Plotted (5, 3) by reading the pair backwards. Always take x first.
- Went right 4 by ignoring the negative, landing in Quadrant I.
- Connected the points in a criss-cross order, producing a crossed shape instead of a rectangle.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
