Key idea
Same y → horizontal side → subtract the x-values. Same x → vertical side → subtract the y-values. Length is never negative. When the side crosses zero, the two distances ADD: from −5 to 4 is 5 + 4 = 9 units.
Sample problems
- Find the length from (1, 4) to (8, 4).
- Find the length from (3, 2) to (3, 10).
- Find the length from (−6, 5) to (−1, 5).
- Find the length from (−2, −7) to (−2, −1).
Common mistakes to watch for
- Subtracted the y-values and got 0. Matching coordinates tell you which pair to leave alone.
- Subtracted the x-values and got 0.
- Answered 1 by computing 3 − 4, ignoring the negative sign. When a side crosses zero the two distances ADD.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
