Key idea

Surface area = the area of the whole net. A rectangular prism has 6 faces in 3 matching pairs: SA = 2(lw) + 2(lh) + 2(wh). A cube is the special case: SA = 6s². Square units, always — you are covering, not filling.

Sample problems

  1. Find the surface area of a cube with edge 2 units.
  2. Find the surface area of a prism 3 by 3 by 5 units.
  3. Find the surface area of a cube with edge 5 units.
  4. Find the surface area of a prism 6 by 4 by 2 units.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered 27 — that is the VOLUME (3 × 3 × 3), not the surface area.
  • Added only 12 + 6 + 8 = 26, counting three faces instead of six. Every face has a twin on the opposite side.
  • Answered 60 — that is the volume 5 × 2 × 6.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
