Watch: Coordinate Plane Explained: Plotting Points and Quadrants
Key idea
(x, y) = across, then up/down. Signs give the quadrant: I (+,+), II (−,+), III (−,−), IV (+,−). Reflecting across the x-axis flips the y; reflecting across the y-axis flips the x.
Sample problems
- In which quadrant is (4, 7)?
- In which quadrant is (−6, 1)?
- In which quadrant is (−2, −8)?
- In which quadrant is (3, −5)?
Common mistakes to watch for
- Said Quadrant IV — plotted (5, −3) by reading the numbers in the wrong order.
- Said Quadrant II — reversed the coordinates.
- Said Quadrant II after checking only the first sign. Both signs decide the quadrant.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
