Key idea

A = πr². Given a diameter, halve it first. Area is in square units; circumference is in plain units. Doubling the radius quadruples the area but only doubles the circumference.

Sample problems

  1. Find the area of a circle with radius 7 cm.
  2. Find the area of a circle with diameter 14 cm.
  3. Why do questions 1 and 2 give the same answer?
  4. Find the area of a circle with radius 2 cm.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered 10π by computing 2πr — that is the circumference.
  • Answered 100π by squaring the diameter. The formula names the radius, and the size of the error (exactly 4×) is a useful fingerprint.
  • Gave both as 25π, or used the same units for each. The unit is the fastest way to tell which quantity you computed.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
