Key idea

Lengths multiply by the scale factor k. Areas multiply by k². To check an area answer, scale both dimensions and multiply them — you should get the same result, and it shows why the square appears.

Sample problems

  1. A path is 5 cm on a 1 : 20 drawing. How long is it really, in centimetres?
  2. A field is 12 cm on a 1 : 200 drawing. How long is it in metres?
  3. A wall is 6 m long. How long is it on a 1 : 100 drawing, in centimetres?
  4. Every length of a shape is multiplied by 2. By what factor is the area multiplied?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Divided by 50 to get 0.06 cm. The real object is larger than the drawing, so the scale multiplies.
  • Answered 200 without converting, or converted first and then scaled.
  • Answered 12 by doubling the area. Area scales by the SQUARE of the length factor, not the factor itself.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
