Key idea

Ask what the knife meets, face by face. Flat faces give straight edges; curved surfaces give curved edges only when the knife travels around them. The direction of the slice matters as much as the solid.

Sample problems

  1. A rectangular prism is sliced horizontally. What shape is the cross-section?
  2. The same prism is sliced vertically. What shape now?
  3. Why does the prism give the same kind of shape both ways, when the cylinder did not?
  4. A cone is sliced horizontally, parallel to its base. What shape?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Answered rectangle by picturing the side view of the cylinder rather than the cut face.
  • Answered circle, assuming a round solid always cuts round. The direction of the slice decides, not the solid.
  • Said both are triangles, picturing the pyramid's outline instead of the cut face.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
